The mechanism
Male-pattern loss comes from DHT shrinking follicles. Finasteride shuts down much of the type 2 5-alpha-reductase enzyme that produces DHT, relieving the pressure so follicles can bounce back.
How well it works
Studies show finasteride stops further loss in about 80–90% of men and regrows visible hair in roughly two-thirds. It works best started early, and it peaks next to minoxidil — around 94% of men improved on the two together at a year.
Pill vs topical
The 1 mg oral tablet is the classic, best-studied option. A topical form delivers it straight to the scalp with lower blood DHT, which can mean fewer systemic side effects while holding most of the benefit.
The honest side-effect story
A small share of men get sexual side effects, usually reversing after they stop. Because it's hormone-active, it's prescription-only and off-limits for women who might become pregnant. For tighter DHT control, dutasteride is the next step to talk over with a doctor.
