Minoxidil for hair loss

Minoxidil is the most-studied regrowth treatment you can grab off the shelf. Here's what it does, the realistic payoff, and what to watch for.

How it works

Rather than touching hormones, minoxidil works right at the follicle — improving blood flow and prolonging the growth phase so strands grow thicker and last longer. Because it stimulates growth instead of blocking DHT, it's normally combined with finasteride or dutasteride.

What results look like

About 84% of users get some response and roughly 60% see regrowth that matters to them. A short shed early on is expected; noticeable change tends to arrive by month three or four, with the full result by a year. Stop using it and the benefit slips away.

What to watch for

Topical can dry or irritate the scalp or trigger stray facial hair; oral can cause fluid retention, dizziness, or extra body hair. Combining it with a DHT blocker or microneedling gets you more return.
