Regenerative Treatments

PRP, microneedling & stem cell therapy for hair loss

Regenerative treatments aim to switch your own follicles back on using growth factors and cell signals. They run from well-studied (PRP, microneedling) to experimental (stem cells, exosomes). Here's the honest picture.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma)

Blood is drawn, spun to concentrate platelets and growth factors, then injected into the scalp. Several studies show PRP can raise hair density and thickness — usually as a complement to minoxidil/finasteride rather than a standalone fix. It runs as a series of sessions with periodic touch-ups.

Microneedling

Fine needles make controlled micro-injuries that trigger wound-healing growth factors and sharply boost how well topical minoxidil or dutasteride absorbs. Studies consistently show microneedling with minoxidil beats minoxidil alone. It's inexpensive and can be done at home (with care) or in-clinic.

Stem cell & exosome therapy

These use stem-cell-derived signals or exosomes to wake dormant follicles. 2024 trials reported more terminal hairs and thicker shafts — encouraging, but the science is still early.

Important: The FDA warns that marketed stem-cell and exosome hair treatments are unapproved, investigational biologics. Results and safety vary, and quality control differs by provider — talk it through with a physician before paying for one.

How they fit together

Treat regenerative options as boosters on top of the proven core (minoxidil + finasteride/dutasteride) or alongside a transplant, not as replacements. Microneedling offers the best value; PRP is reasonable with realistic expectations; stem cell and exosome work is best approached carefully while the evidence matures.
